Last year, Lidl Hungary sold Hungarian wine for HUF 14.2 billion
Lidl Hungary sold a total of HUF 14.2 billion worth of Hungarian wine domestically and abroad, the turnover increased by almost 60 percent in five years, the supermarket chain told MTI on Thursday.
The export turnover reached 15 million bottles, and the most popular Hungarian wine types abroad are Furmin, Kárálléányka and Grüybarát. The range is extensive, they distribute products from both family wineries and large wineries, bringing them more than HUF 60 billion in revenue from 2018 to 2022. Lidl currently sells more than 200 types of Hungarian wine in 16 European countries, they wrote.
Almost a decade ago, the department store chain decided to give priority to bottled wines as part of its program for Hungarian suppliers, and to help producers reach abroad as well. The initiative is considered a success, since, according to the announcement, Hungarian wines have maintained their competitiveness despite the market difficulties. They pointed out that two of Lidl’s own brand wines also won gold medals at this year’s Berliner Wein Trophy international wine competition.
