LEGO is building its own video game development division – a new era begins
LEGO is opening a new chapter in its video game strategy: the company announced that it will strengthen its own development team and reduce its dependence on external partners. With this move, the Danish gaming giant wants to exercise greater control over the quality and direction of games associated with its brand, Eurogamer reported.
The end of TT Games’ dominance
For the past 15 years, LEGO games have been developed primarily by the British TT Games, which is responsible for iconic series such as LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Harry Potter, LEGO Marvel, LEGO DC and LEGO Dimensions. These have been huge successes over the years, but recently TT Games has released fewer titles.
In the last six years, only one major LEGO game has been released, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which debuted in 2022. Although TT Games is working on another title, it is not expected to be released until 2025 at the earliest.
LEGO takes development into its own hands
Niels Christiansen, CEO of LEGO, said in an interview with the Financial Times that part of the company’s long-term strategy is to ramp up in-house development.
“We can clearly say that as long as we work under the LEGO brand, we can provide experiences for all ages in this area,”
– Christiansen said.
The CEO also emphasized that as a family-owned company, LEGO takes a long-term view and does not shy away from major investments if this can ensure its future success.
