Foreign tourists don’t often go anywhere else outside of Budapest
March showed a significant increase in Hungarian tourism statistics, mainly due to the early occurrence of the Easter long weekend.
Total guest numbers and overnight stays at tourism accommodations saw considerable growth compared to the same period last year. However, these impressive numbers need context: last March’s tourism was unusually low due to peak inflation and many hotels not reopening due to the energy crisis. Analysts highlight the role of real wage increases, warmer March weather, and the timing of Easter in boosting domestic tourism. International tourism also recovered steadily from the pandemic, with Budapest continuing to dominate the scene, capturing the majority of foreign overnight stays, while other regions lagged behind.
