Corn can be replaced with sorghum due to the drought
This year, extreme weather, especially drought, caused severe damage across Europe, especially in Central and South-Eastern Europe and Southern Europe. The drought resulted in significant crop losses in Hungary as well, where a 15-20% drop in agriculture is to be expected, Erik Kovács, senior researcher at the Climate Policy Institute, told InfoRádio.
Serious crop losses and supply problems
According to Erik Kovács, the drought particularly affected apples, melons, cherries, sunflowers and corn. In the case of apples, 150,000 tons less are harvested in Hungary than last year, and this does not even cover domestic consumption needs. Although the corn yield is expected to be sufficient for the domestic supply, certain imports may also be necessary due to export obligations.
In the case of sunflower, Hungary will need to import, as it will be more difficult to obtain the required quantity due to the drought conditions in Europe and the war in Ukraine. It is expected that imports can be replaced from Asia or Russia.
