Government supports waterfowl farmers in preventing the bird flu epidemic
The Hungarian State Treasury has already disbursed 2.038 billion forints in state aid to the waterfowl sector to help them protect themselves against bird flu. Thanks to the government’s support, based on applications submitted in July, 105 affected poultry farmers will receive funds in the first round.

There is significant interest in the compensation, which will be received by all affected parties by November, informed Minister of Agriculture István Nagy, who emphasized that this year agriculture, including the waterfowl sector, has faced numerous challenges. The regular appearance of the bird flu virus is causing serious losses for the entire Hungarian poultry sector, so the most important task now is to mitigate epidemiological risks, increase the safety of farms and strengthen competitiveness. To this end, the Ministry of Agriculture has launched a support program in which farmers who have agreed to suspend their production for three years − i.e. not keep poultry − and not establish a new farm can receive funds. The decision is based on the fact that the high density of poultry flocks makes protection significantly more difficult. The support specifically provides compensation for farms previously affected by avian influenza outbreaks, contributing to strengthening farmers’ awareness and the long-term stability of the sector, the minister added.
