In the case of Hungarian forests, we have adequate knowledge, numerous research results and practical management models in order to facilitate adaptation to climate change, which, in addition to professional challenges, is also an opportunity for players in the forest-based economy, said Péter Zambó, the National Forestry Association, on Thursday in Budapest at the Climate Change 2024 conference organized by The Secretary of State responsible for forests and land affairs of the Ministry of Agriculture emphasized that the effects of climate change are faster than what natural forests can follow, so professional interventions are needed.

From sensor and satellite monitoring systems to the search for propagating materials of southern origin to precipitation retention solutions to be built in forests, we have a lot of working practical solutions in our hands, the expansion of their application is an important task in order to preserve the country’s most important green assets. On the one hand, forests are affected by climate change, and on the other hand, they play a key role in curbing its effects and creating a sustainable civilization – emphasized Péter Zambo, who drew attention to the fact that, based on its ability to absorb carbon, a properly managed, healthy forest can rightly be called the most important biological climate protection infrastructure on our planet. He added that one of the most possible and cost-effective solutions to the problem generated by industrial civilization is the forest. Our objective is therefore to increase the quantity and social utilization of sustainable products produced by the forest-based industry as a circular economy, explained the state secretary.

The lectures of the conference of the National Forestry Association presented the innovative methods that are available to farmers to help the climate adaptation of forests. The event is part of the collaboration between the National Forestry Association and the University of Sopron, the aim of which is to encourage the implementation of the latest research results into practice and thereby contribute to the sustainable management of Hungarian forests.
