The costumes of the iconic Squid Game guards are still popular even though the series ended last year, and Stranger Things and Minecraft costumes are also appearing on the marketplaces. If someone would like to dress up as a police officer or firefighter, the good news is that original uniforms from previous decades are also easily available on the two marketplaces. Vatera and Jófogaz examined this year’s costume trends based on the marketplaces’ sales and attendance data.
The numbers from Jófogaz and Vatera clearly show that domestic users are most looking for costumes in January and February, during the traditional carnival season. Although sales increase in October before Halloween, which is also becoming increasingly popular in Hungary, this does not come close to the turnover of the carnival season on the two platforms. This is probably the result of the fact that the tradition of saying goodbye to winter is much more popular than the Anglo-Saxon holiday.
Costumes sell better during Carnival than before Halloween
Vatera’s data shows that five times as many children’s costumes are sold in a year as adult masks. With the latter, there is a greater chance of purchasing discounted items, as only six out of ten children’s costumes are sold at a fixed price, while with adult costumes this ratio is seven out of ten – so in the case of the former, there is an opportunity to bid on more products. Costumes have been sold at an average price of 3-5 thousand forints on Vaterá and Jófogás in the past year, this amount is calculated from the average of accessories that can be purchased separately, as well as new and second-hand products.
Although it ended last summer, the costumes of the iconic, masked guard characters of the Squid Game series are still popular in both the children’s and adult categories, and the first Stranger Things costumes have already appeared on the two platforms, although it is undoubtedly a greater challenge to dress up as a lifelike character from this series than as the hooded, masked guard from the South Korean series.
You can dress up not only as cowboys and contemporary police officers for cheap
However, the statistics of Vatera and Jófogaz show that pirate, cowboy, witch and Harry Potter costume themes have not gone out of fashion yet, and these adult and children’s costumes are present in large numbers in both categories. Original uniforms can also be purchased on the two marketplaces, whether it is police, prison guard, firefighter or even military themes: from the monarchy era through World War II to the 2000s, you can find good-quality examples. A less rare police uniform is also available at a reasonable price, so it can even be a good choice for use as a costume for adult-sized carnival goers.
Among the costumes for girls, costumes from characters from Frozen, Miraculous Ladybug and other Disney fairy tale films are still the most popular at Jófogás and Vatera. In addition, costumes inspired by Wednesday and the K-pop Demon Hunters are also sought after. In addition to classic boys’ costumes, such as superheroes from the Marvel and DC universes or characters from Star Wars, video game themes are also gaining popularity: for example, Minecraft Steve, the main character of the well-known game, and Super Mario are also becoming increasingly popular.
These were the most valuable pieces
High-quality and realistic costumes are changing hands at Jófogás and Vatera for higher prices, often tens of thousands of forints. For example, at Jófogás, a full-body, animator dog costume was sold for 100 thousand forints, while at Vatera, a Squid Game child costume cost a buyer almost 30 thousand forints. Users are willing to pay a lot of money for the elaborate Star Wars costumes and accessories, but they have also snapped up Gru, Sonic the Hedgehog, Jurassic Park-inspired dinosaur and priest cassock costumes for tens of thousands of forints.
