Small farms dominate EU agriculture
In the EU Member States in 2016, 10.3 million farms were operating on 171 million hectares, two thirds of them had less than 5 hectares are and only 11 percent of their leaders were under 40 years of age – according to Eurostat’s survey.
The most extreme is the size distribution of farms in Romania. 33 percent of the number of farms in the Union was Romania, while 92 percent of them 3.1 million farms were smaller than 5 hectares. Farms with more than 50 hectares are only 0.5 percent, but they account for 51 percent of the country’s agricultural land. (MTI)
