According to the managing director of Kifli.hu, this is why food is the most expensive in Hungary
It’s no secret that abroad – for example in Slovakia – various products are offered at more favorable prices than in Hungary. According to Péter Klekner, the managing director of Kifli.hu, the reason for this is the strong euro, as the exchange rate significantly affects purchase prices.

“This unpleasant and powerful effect can also be felt in Hungary. We did not plan for the extra profit tax, so it means an extra expense, and it was not an easy task to include it in the budget. I do not usually criticize the government’s actions, because I am a businessman who deals with business. At the same time, it requires maneuvers so that the unfavorable extra burdens are not completely passed on to the customers”
– explained Klekner in a recent interview with Index.
Péter Klekner does not see any change in the value of his basket, but he notices that people are buying more consciously, they spend more time choosing the products, and premium, branded products are increasingly pushed into the background.
A lot can also depend on utility bills, people can probably spend the most on food, he added. He also stated that he considers the typical food industry step of reducing the weight of the product to avoid a price increase to be a fraud, and therefore does not want to use it.
