Should ketchup go in the fridge or the pantry? Heinz has settled the debate
The age-old question of whether ketchup should be stored in the fridge or the pantry after opening has finally been settled – at least according to Heinz. The well-known sauce maker has made it clear that ketchup belongs in the fridge after opening.
Heinz’s official stance
Heinz spokesperson Olivia Lennon told MailOnline:
“We are pleased to share with Heinz Tomato Ketchup lovers that our ketchup should be stored in the fridge after opening. While we know that many Heinz ketchup fans store the sauce in the pantry, we recommend refrigeration after opening. This is the best way to preserve the distinctive taste of Heinz Tomato Ketchup.”
While ketchup bottles are initially sealed airtight to be stored on supermarket shelves, once opened, Heinz strongly recommends storing in the fridge to preserve the taste and quality.
Health risks of ketchup stored in the pantry
What Cost food storage expert Joshua Houston echoed Heinz’s advice, highlighting the health risks of storing it in the pantry after opening. According to Houston, “Sauces play an important role in some dishes; ketchup and fries are a popular pairing almost everywhere. But make sure you store your sauces properly, because no one wants to eat food that has gone bad.”
Houston warned that an opened bottle of ketchup that is left in the pantry at room temperature will spoil faster and can even grow mold. This can pose serious health risks. He also advises that ketchup should be consumed within a month, even if stored in the refrigerator. If the sauce turns sour, that’s a sign that it’s no longer safe to eat.
