OKSZ requests amendment of cash payment proposal The National Trade Federation (OKSZ) requests the government to amend the draft law on the use of cash, because the draft would make the use of cash mandatory in several places where there is no understandable public demand for it, the implementation is not viable, it imposes unjustified costs on traders, and it exposes employees involved in deliveries to danger. The draft also puts Hungarian companies at a disadvantage because it does not apply to foreigners.

“The National Trade Federation first encountered the planned amendment to the law on the use of cash in the framework of the social consultation, and it is puzzled by it,”

– says Tamás Kozák, the secretary general of the federation. The OKSZ is asking the government to amend the proposal because it would make it mandatory to ensure the use of cash at several points where electronic payment methods work perfectly, there is no public demand for cash payments, the implementation is not viable, but it would impose serious costs on traders and operators, and expose employees involved in delivery to danger.

A huge problem with the plan is that the planned amendment does not affect companies based abroad, so all these disadvantages will only and exclusively apply to Hungarian-owned traders, and will not adversely affect foreign players who already enjoy a competitive situation of dubious purity. This problem will further increase the competitiveness gap between Hungarian and foreign e-retailers, which will push not only Hungarian traders, but also Hungarian products out of the market in the long run.

The draft law does not take into account that retail players, with market competition in mind, have already designed the payment methods applicable at various points of purchase according to the needs of customers. Therefore, if cash payment is not currently available somewhere, it is because there is no customer demand for it, alternative cash purchase options are available, or the use of cash raises other serious problems.
