Behind every Hungaricum is the Hungarian mind, the work of the Hungarian hand, the loyalty of the Hungarian heart, therefore these values are not only our pride, but also our answers to who we Hungarians are – stated István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture, Chairman of the Hungaricum Committee, at the 5th Hungaricum Award Gala at the Budapest Operetta Theatre on Tuesday.

At the event, the Minister highlighted that Hungaricums carry within them the precision of handicrafts, the commitment of producers to quality, the loyalty of traditionalists and the cohesion of the community. Our national values mean glory and benefit for the entire Hungarian people. Our culture, traditions, and common identity will only remain alive if we take care of them, pass them on and view them as a value – emphasized the Minister.

At the ceremony, Zsolt V. Németh, the Prime Minister’s Commissioner for the Protection of the Hungarian Way of Life and National Values, recalled that the Hungaricum Act has been in force for 13 years now. The popularity of the related application system is unbroken, as more than 500 applications were received for this year’s call, ranging from programs strengthening local identity, to films and the design of image elements, to the preservation of folk costumes and craft traditions. In addition to the 98 Hungaricum, 162 outstanding national values and several thousand settlement and regional treasures serving as the basis of the value pyramid are registered, he added.

At the gala, representatives of the Hungaricum Committee solemnly presented the awards to all those who contributed to the enrichment of our national values with their proposals. They are the ones whose submissions were included in the Hungaricum Collection, which currently has 98 items. Since 2013, a total of 89 “Hungaricum farmers” have received the prestigious recognition, and at today’s event, 9 more Hungaricum representatives will receive the award and diploma.

The cart is an old testament to Hungarian ingenuity and craftsmanship, a characteristic of our szaloncukor confectionery industry, which also means the intimacy of the holidays for every Hungarian family. The Hatvan Aranyfácán Súrített Paradicsom is a classic of the Hungarian food industry, and the southern bell ringing has connected the Hungarians of the Carpathian Basin for centuries. The csárdás tells a wonderful story about the Hungarian temperament and dance culture, and the Badacsony kéknyelű proclaims the greatness of our wines and winemakers. In terms of gastronomy and ethnography, the csárda is an integral part of the peasant culture of our nation: it symbolizes the occupation, lifestyle, customs, animals and fairs. Of the two newest Hungaricums, the Cognitive Pedagogy System based on the Pető method provides support to families worldwide as a Hungarian intellectual heritage, while the Hungarian saddle preserves the centuries-old knowledge of our equestrian culture.

The event also presented the Hungarikum Liget Media Award, which this year went to the producers of the Kossuth Radio program Déli harangszó. The award was founded by the Vice President of the Parliament and recognizes the work of those who do a lot to strengthen the awareness and popularity of the Hungaricum movement. The goal of the Hungarikum Award Gala is to draw attention to the importance of appreciating our national values.
