Croatian Economy Minister says tourism is driving up prices in Croatia
Seasonal effects due to the tourist season are causing the new price increases in Croatia, said Economy Minister Ante Susnjar in an interview with Croatian Public Radio on Wednesday.
At the same time, unfortunately, the prices of everyday products are also increasing, which is affecting citizens, the minister added, recalling that the government has officially limited the prices of 70 products since February this year.
According to the latest data from the Croatian Statistical Office, inflation accelerated to 3.5 percent in May after 3.2 percent in April.
The minister pointed out:
the tourist season arrived earlier this year than in previous years, and there are already many tourists in the country, which he believes is a positive phenomenon.
He emphasized that the Ministry of Tourism has set guidelines for the development of Croatian tourism, because it is a price-sensitive activity, and higher prices may direct the flow of people and capital to other destinations.
Susnjar expressed his hope that this will not happen in the case of Croatia. He also called on those involved in the tourism and service sectors to act responsibly, primarily for their own benefit, so that they can earn a full year’s income.
“Tourists who come here live with us for a certain period of time, and it is logical that the consumption of food and drinks and the demand for all products and services will increase, but we must remain within the framework of reality in order to achieve sustainable tourism and so that it does not have a negative impact on our citizens,”
he said.
