Exports of shelled nuts and nut guts also fell
According to KSH data, the walnut harvest in 2022 was 6.45 thousand tons, 8 percent more than a year earlier. According to experts, the harvest in 2023 was weaker than average. In Hungary, the foreign trade balance of shelled nuts is positive, despite the fact that shelled nut exports have decreased in recent years.
The volume of exports of shelled walnuts dropped to 248.7 tons (-63 percent) and their value to HUF 238.8 million (-65 percent) between January and November 2023 compared to the same period of the previous year. The delivery was primarily directed to Germany (82.4 thousand tons, -73 percent). The import was not significant, 6.4 tons at the same time.
The foreign trade balance of walnut guts has turned negative in recent years
The volume of imports decreased to 692 tons (-34 percent) and the value to HUF 1.1 billion (-45 percent) during the observed period. More than 60 percent of the walnut guts came from Ukraine (438 tons, -28 percent). The volume of Hungarian nut gut exports changed to 146 tons (-46 percent) and 306.6 million forints (-51 percent) in value. In the first eleven months of 2023, 62.2 tons (-55 percent) of nut casings were sent to the United Kingdom, which is considered the dominant export market, and 29.3 tons (-55 percent) to Romania.
On the Budapest Wholesale Market, domestic walnut kernels harvested in 2023 were sold at a 9 percent higher price (HUF 3,481/kilogram) between the 41st week of 2023 and the 7th week of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year. At the same time, imported nut guts were offered at an average price of HUF 3,401/kilogram (-6 percent), lower than domestic ones.
