The Hungarian wine drinker
Wine is a traditional drink in Hungary. Nearly half of the population over the age of 18 drinks wine. 20 percent of our compatriots drink wine at least once a week. The proportion of those who drink wine more often increases with consumers’ age. What are the reasons for not drinking wine? According to research conducted by Gfk Hungária, Consumer Tracking survey data and a Dietary Habits study, 37 percent do not drink alcohol, 21 percent cite health reasons and 43 percent simply do not like wine. Wine drinking today is associated with a pleasant, relaxed environment. For many it is the drink for ”bringing together” small communities/families, it is considered an essential component of long chats. It is an excellent choice in every season and wine is drunk with lunch or dinner. We drink most of our wine at parties and at home. In terms of volume, 10 percent of wine is consumed at restaurants. Most consumers are not willing to try new wines, they pick well-known brands from familiar wine regions. With the increasing popularity of wine tours and wine festivals, the average consumer is offered a good chance to learn about wines and wine making.
