In the Shadow of Child Labor – the latest episode of the NMHH Podcast deals with kidfluencers
The opinion leaders of today are influencers, who can also be considered brand ambassadors, who build a financial model on their popularity. But why do we expect the faces of online media to guide us in certain issues of life – be it a healthy lifestyle, raising children or even dressing -? – asks Petra Aczél, communication researcher, head of research at the NMHH Institute of Media Studies, and Ádám Guld, media researcher, associate professor at the University of Pécs, in the 8th episode of the NMHH Podcast, which deals with children’s online safety.
The NMHH Communications Directorate told MTI on Monday that we are living in the age of instant experts, which means that anyone can start dealing with a topic without really understanding it.
Instant experts are validated by viewership: if an influencer is followed enough, many people start to believe what that person says or presents is credible after a while.
The experts speaking on the show, regarding kidfluencers, i.e. underage influencers, consider it problematic for anyone to use a child for economic gain.
The experts warn that anyone who appears on social media with a face and name as a content producer will sooner or later find a group of users whose members post provocative, grossly offensive comments under the content just for fun. No child is mature enough to handle such attacks in their proper place.
Kidfluencers are therefore shadowed by child labor, and it is never really possible to judge how public appearances during childhood will affect the well-being of an adult child’s character 10-15 years later. Why would we tattoo a mark on our child’s soul that could haunt them for a lifetime? – asks Petra Aczél in the show.
