The GVH has finalized its report on the accelerated sectoral examination of durable foods
After the public consultation, the Economic Competition Authority (GVH) published on its website the final report of the accelerated sectoral investigation conducted on the durable (canned and frozen) food market. The recommendations of the report strengthen the market competition of the domestic raw material production, production and trade of food, thus contributing to the reduction of food prices, which is also facilitated by the Price Monitoring System launched on the first of July.
The national competition authority conducted an accelerated sector investigation in the first half of the year, in which it analyzed possible distortions and limitations of market competition for canned and frozen food products. The investigation was followed by an open social consultation, during which the GVH coordinated the content and proposals of the draft report with the domestic food industry and trade professional organizations and representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture. The authority processed and incorporated the comments received during the attendance consultation in its final report, so that through its findings and proposals, it could help reduce food prices with the widest possible professional consensus. The latter include encouraging the domestic production of vegetables and fruits with subsidies for the installation of irrigation systems, supporting the use of renewable energy sources, streamlining agricultural vocational training, as well as developments aimed at automation and cooperation between producers. In addition, the GVH recommends that the packaging of durable products should move in a more sustainable direction, in accordance with the principle of the circular economy, which also promises significant cost savings potential.
