A new solution is being developed to make mushroom cultivation more efficient
With the support of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NKFIH), the University of Szeged (SZTE) and Új Champignons Kft. are developing a new solution to improve the efficiency of mushroom cultivation – the public relations directorate of the higher education institution informed MTI.
According to the announcement, the two-spore mushroom (Agaricus bisporus), which is also known as a white and brown-capped version, is one of the most popular cultivated mushrooms worldwide, and in Europe and Hungary it is the most popular and consumed mushroom species in the largest quantity, accounting for 90 percent of the cultivated mushroom volume.
In the cultivation houses, the formation of pinheads in the mushroom compost interwoven with mycelium begins with the mediation of naturally present bacteria when the houses are cooled. At this time, the mycelium that has been developing in the compost until then “blooms” and the formation of mushroom fruiting bodies begins. The process can be accelerated and the yield can be increased by using an inoculum made from a bacterium that promotes the formation of pinheads.
Infectious diseases caused by viruses, bacteria and molds pose a serious challenge for growers. These pathogens that occur in cultivation directly or indirectly affect the quantity and quality of the crop. The range of permitted chemical control options that can be used against them is limited and is narrowing every year, and there is an increasing demand from consumers for mushrooms produced without chemicals and from organic cultivation.
By using preparations based on appropriately selected microorganisms with favorable properties, champignon mushrooms can be effectively protected from the attack of microbial pathogens.
