The head of the ministry said: in order for this to be realized, it is necessary to simplify the application of subsidies for farmers and to make the process of agricultural production more predictable. He called supporting small and medium-sized farms and making agriculture attractive to young people important principles for the future. As he said, these are also extremely important from the point of view of the safety of food chains. “If we support the farmers of the European Union, we guarantee an adequate and safe food supply for the citizens of the EU, while also ensuring a sustainable future,” the minister stated, adding that subsidies for farmers should not be reduced under any circumstances.

István Nagy called the two-day meeting a success, during which, as he said, the heads of ministries also discussed how they can determine the future of the common EU agricultural policy after 2027

In addition, he informed that an agreement had been reached on fishing quotas in the Baltic Sea for the year 2025, and it was possible to reconcile the social and societal interests of coastal communities with scientific knowledge about the long-term sustainability of fish stocks. The ministers also discussed the EU’s trade relations, including the situation of the agri-food industry, with a special focus on Ukraine and China. István Nagy also said that the participants discussed “how the farmers of the European Union can be the winners and beneficiaries of the EU trade policy”. The minister also stood up for the area-based subsidies, the cancellation of which, according to him, would endanger the food supply. He pointed out that almost all of the member states were in favor of keeping these subsidies.
