Earth gets trash for Christmas
During the Christmas period, the amount of waste increases significantly in most countries due to gifts, decorations and an increased number of purchases. The U.S. produces an average of 25 percent more junk and the UK 30 percent more garbage during this period – in the latter it is estimated that about 1 billion postcards land in fill after Christmas.
To make matters worse, due to the pandemic situation and constraints, almost everything from buying gifts to Christmas shopping this year is taking place in the digital space, which further increases the amount of waste due to the usually unnecessarily large and mostly non-environmentally friendly packaging.
