The production area and yield of garlic is also decreasing
According to KSH data, the cultivation area and yield of garlic shows a decreasing trend: the yield was between 5.2 and 7.9 thousand tons in the last five years, in 2022 5,484 tons of garlic were harvested from 815 hectares, which was 2 percent less than a year earlier. 80 percent of domestic garlic is grown in Csongrád-Csanád County.

According to KSH data, the import of garlic decreased by 47 percent to 822.2 tons between January and July 2023 compared to the same period of the previous year. Less garlic arrived from Spain (-70 percent, 307 tons), Turkey (-11 percent, 149.6 tons), but more garlic from the Netherlands (+70 percent, 123.7 tons). Annually, 400–680 tons of garlic are exported, which are mainly directed to neighboring countries, the export fell by 31 percent to 168 tons in the indicated period.

The price of domestically grown, large, 45 mm+ size category garlic (HUF 1,200/kilogram) was the same as 2023 39–42. per week with the average price of the same period of the previous year. Garlic from Spain was available for a shorter time, in May, at a price similar to the same period of the previous year (HUF 1,200/kilogram).
