Consumers benefit from the change in warranty rules
By amending the mandatory warranty rules, consumers will be given new and broader rights against businesses. It is worthwhile to monitor these and use our rights provided by the legislation – points out Réka Vass, a senior lawyer at the international law firm Baker McKenzie.
In May of this year, the amendment to the government decree on the mandatory warranty for certain consumer durables came into effect. The amendment significantly affects the duration of the mandatory warranty, as well as the provisions regarding warranty tickets.
From the beginning of July, the consumer goods covered by the mandatory warranty will not be listed in the annex to the government decree, but in a separate ministerial decree. In the decree that is already in force, the previous product groups do not change significantly – for example, fur clothing products are removed, i.e. they are no longer covered by the mandatory warranty, but at the same time, equipment operated by electricity for pets, such as hair clippers, collars or trackers, appears as a new category.
The mandatory warranty applies not only to the consumer goods themselves, but also to their new accessories and parts, if their selling price reaches HUF ten thousand. In other words, if we buy a new accessory or spare part for our used consumer product – for example, due to a malfunction, we need to buy a new motor for a five-year-old washing machine – then the mandatory warranty will apply to it in the same way, regardless of whether the basic consumer product – i.e. the washing machine itself – is still covered. this warranty or not.
