FAO welcomes UN resolution on International Coffee Day
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations welcomes the UN General Assembly’s decision to designate October 1 as World Coffee Day.
The resolution adopted in New York on Tuesday recognizes “the cultural, social and historical significance of coffee from its origins to the present day, as it is not lost on contemporary societies.” “It is no longer just an agricultural commodity or a source of livelihood, but has become a symbol of community relations, cultural expression and everyday traditions across generations.” The resolution highlights the role of coffee production and processing in achieving several Sustainable Development Goals, namely the forward-looking targets of ending hunger (Goal 2), eradicating extreme poverty (Goal 1), empowering women (Goal 5) and promoting decent work and economic growth (Goal 8). “Coffee – from the bean to the café – is more than a beverage, it is a globally traded food staple that provides livelihoods for millions of farming families, connecting communities and markets around the world,” said FAO Director-General Zhou Tongju. “Recognizing the importance of the coffee industry can help raise awareness of its socio-economic importance and strengthen its role in poverty eradication. We look forward to celebrating the first World Day and its spirit.”
The draft resolution of the 44th Session of the FAO Conference in 2025. It was submitted to the UN General Assembly after its adoption at the 2015 session.
Accordingly, FAO was asked to coordinate with the International Coffee Day, involving relevant organizations and partners, such as the International Coffee Organization.
The importance of coffee
Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed beverages in the world, with global per capita consumption growing by 1.2% per year over the past 10 years. The sector provides a livelihood for around 25 million producers and others working in the coffee value chain. Overall, the global coffee industry generates more than 200 billion in annual revenue.
In addition, coffee is one of the most important food staples in world trade. In 2024, global production exceeded 11 million tons, of which 8 million tons changed hands on international markets. In that year, global coffee production was estimated to be worth $25 billion, while coffee bean trade represented a $34 billion market.
Coffee exports are an important source of income for many low-income countries. In 2024, coffee accounted for 27.9% of Ethiopia’s exports, compared with 20.1% in Uganda and 19.5% in Burundi. For Ethiopia and Uganda, coffee revenues exceed food import expenditure, while for Burundi they cover almost 20%.
Brazil and Vietnam were the largest coffee exporters in 2024, and the European Union and the United States of America were the largest buyers.
With the establishment of International Coffee Day, FAO stands ready to work with countries and partners to make this special day a catalyst for collaboration, knowledge sharing and real action across the coffee value chain. By drawing attention to the challenges and opportunities facing millions of producers, Coffee Day can strengthen global commitment to an efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable coffee sector, thereby contributing significantly to food security and rural development.
