FAO recognizes young farmers
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is inviting nominations for the Young Farmers of Europe and Central Asia Award. The initiative aims to celebrate and support young farmers and agricultural associations who are transforming the agri-food sector in the region. The deadline for applications is 31 July 2025.
The young generation plays a key role in the future of food production, with 44% of the world’s young workers working in agriculture. Their potential is enormous: eradicating youth unemployment and providing them with more livelihood opportunities could add 1.4% ($1.5 trillion) to global gross domestic product (GDP), 45% of which would come directly from agri-food systems.
FAO is recognizing the contribution of young farmers to sustainable agriculture, rural development, community building and innovative solutions in the face of growing global challenges. The aim is to inspire the next generation, foster knowledge sharing and strengthen youth participation in the food and agriculture sectors.
“Young farmers are not only the future of agriculture – they are also actively shaping its present,” said Viorel Gutu, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia. “This initiative is born out of a commitment to showcase the innovative thinking, perseverance and leadership skills of young farmers. By celebrating their successes, we aim to inspire our young peers, attract new talent and build the networks of collaboration that are essential for building more sustainable and resilient agri-food systems in Europe and Central Asia.”
Recipients of the award will have a unique opportunity to share their inspiring stories, experiences and messages with their peers, policymakers and other relevant stakeholders. The initiative actively promotes networking, connecting young leaders of the future with experienced professionals, researchers and decision-makers. Award-winning farmers will also have the opportunity to participate in other high-profile events and initiatives organized by FAO and its partners.
Farmers and farmer organizations aged between 18 and 35 are eligible to apply for the award by 31 July 2025, by completing the application form here. The award categories are: innovation in agri-food systems; community building; and increasing social inclusion and empowerment of young people.
