Tourist traffic in the Danube Delta is decreasing due to the proximity of war
In Romania, tourist traffic in the Danube Delta nature reserve decreased significantly, by twenty percent, last year due to the proximity of the war in Ukraine, Economedia.ro wrote, based on a report by Radio Constanta.
Daniel Ilusca, head of the Association of Tourist Employers in the Danube Delta, told the Romanian public radio station’s Constanta regional studio that the decrease was due to mobile phone alerts, Ro-Alert messages, introduced in Romanian territory due to Russian drone attacks in Ukraine.
According to statistics, the decrease also affects hotels, guesthouses accessible by car in the Danube Delta area, as well as isolated guesthouses accessible only by water or boat.
The number of guest nights per reservation also decreased: while in 2023, tourists spent an average of three nights in the nature reserve, famous for its birdlife, last year reservations for two nights were typical.
Daniel Ilusca stated:
The Romanian Ministry of Defense and the relevant institutions should narrow the scope of telephone alerts regarding drone attacks in Ukraine to cover a smaller area and not endanger the entire delta’s tourist traffic.
