According to the latest report of the Institute of Agricultural Economics, in the first quarter of 2024, significant changes took place in Hungary’s livestock and meat processing sector. Based on the data, the number of cattle and sheep slaughters decreased, while the number of pig and chicken slaughters increased.

According to the latest report of the Institute of Agricultural Economics, in the first quarter of 2024, significant changes took place in Hungary’s livestock and meat processing sector. Based on the data, the number of cattle and sheep slaughters decreased, while the number of pig and chicken slaughters increased.

Reduction of cattle and sheep slaughters

According to the report, 18.5 thousand cattle were slaughtered in the first quarter of 2024, which represents a 13.5 percent decrease compared to the same period of the previous year. The slaughter of cows fell by 17 percent, while that of bulls only decreased by 1.5 percent. Although the import of live cattle increased, the export far exceeded the import, mainly to Kosovo, Croatia and Austria.

A decline was also experienced in the case of sheep, only 9.9 thousand sheep were slaughtered in Hungarian slaughterhouses, which is an annual decrease of almost 10 percent. Despite this, the sheep population increased by 4.1 percent compared to the previous year.
