Disney’s most expensive Star Wars hotel to become a development center

Disney’s once-ambitious Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser project has been shelved for good. The billion-dollar luxury hotel, which was set to open in 2022, operated for just one year before being shuttered due to high maintenance costs and logistical hurdles. The iconic location is now home to Walt Disney Imagineering’s development division, VG reports.

Transforming into an Imagineering hub

The Starcruiser’s famous deck bridge, bar, and lobby were originally intended to be part of a dinner theater project, but will eventually be completely closed off to guests and transformed into a development hub. Imagineering will use the building to manage expansion projects at Walt Disney World. Initiatives included include a Latin American-themed section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, attractions inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones, and the Verda and Disney Villains theme parks at the Magic Kingdom.

Why didn’t it stay open?

One of the main reasons for the closure was the hotel’s difficult location. Starcruiser originally transported guests to the hotel on themed flights, but due to their low capacity, the facility proved unsustainable in the long term. Despite the positive reviews of the experience by guests and critics, profitability problems led Disney to abandon the project.

The ultimate failure of the British Disneyland project

Disney’s other projects were not always successful. After more than ten years of planning and negotiations, the plan for a “British Disneyland”, known as the London Resort, was finally scrapped. The project was hampered by a number of financing disputes and environmental concerns, until the British High Court finally liquidated the London Resort Company Holdings.

The park was planned to occupy an area of 535 hectares, which would have included an amusement park, water park, event centers, e-sports facilities and retail units. The final cancellation of the project is a lesson for Disney that even the biggest franchises are no guarantee of a successful investment.
