Cuba Libre Cocktail – the original drink, made with Bacardi rum – is 112 years old
Cuba Libre, the world’s first BACARDI rum cocktail was first made in 1900 in Havana and today more than 6 million people enjoy it every day. It was in 1900 that the Cuban War of Independence ended. During the war many people from the USA ended up in Cuba and they brought Coca-Cola® with them. Coke soon became very popular and while Cubans were celebrating the victory in The American Bar, a captain of the US Army decided to mix Cuban BACARDI rum with Coca-Cola® and topped it with a squirt of fresh lime. As a toast the captain said ‘¡Por Cuba libre!’ and this is how the new cocktail got its name. Original BACARDI Cuba Libre became people’s favourite because it is easy to prepare and tastes great. After 150 long years BACARDI still keeps making influential, excellent cocktails.
