COOP stays with the Hungarian Olympic Team for another four years
Almost simultaneously with the founding of the COOP chain of stores, the commercial group entered into an alliance with the Hungarian Olympic Committee. This cooperation, which has lasted for almost three decades, will continue in the next five-ring cycle, so the joint work to promote Hungarian elite sports and the Olympic ideal can be enriched by another four years. The contract on cooperation was signed recently at COOP’s headquarters in Budapest.
The COOP Economic Group is celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of its founding this year, the anniversary of the owners of the former tax-free stores reorganizing their activities as modern business companies within the framework of a franchise chain. Over the past three decades, the Hungarian commercial sector has undergone great changes, and numerous challenges have tested the sector, but thanks to the determined work of COOP’s cohesive community, Coop has always been able to compete, with which it remains a stable and unavoidable player in the sector to this day.
This is better proven by the fact that COOP has the most stores and the largest coverage among the commercial players operating in our country. The chain of stores operates with approximately 340 member companies, nearly 16 thousand employees, and one million regular customers visit its 2100 stores every day. Its stores are present in 1400 settlements in our country, making it one of the largest employers in small settlements in Hungary. Its business developments are characterized by technological modernization, the environment and energy awareness, as a result of which solar panels can now be found in 750 stores, which produce more than 38 GWh of electricity, providing 23 percent of the chain’s electricity consumption from renewable energy sources.
The national social program of the commercial group, based on 4 pillars, highlights the support of the Olympic ideal, setting role models, and popularizing the role of sport in shaping community and values, as well as in health-conscious living. In this spirit, Coop has been working with the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB) since 1996, within the framework of which it has been supporting the Hungarian Olympic Team’s Olympic preparations for 29 years.
“We are proud of our results, which we could not have achieved without such special and decisive partners as the MOB. One of our first most important steps after our foundation was to enter into an alliance, so our relationship is almost as old as COOP. No matter what difficulties we have encountered over the past three decades, we have been unwavering in our determination to continue the work we have started, so there was no question of extending our partnership for the next Olympic cycle,” said László Pekó, CO-OP Hungary Zrt. Chairman of the Board of Directors, then added: “It is a pleasure for them that our partnership not only extended to supporting Hungarian elite sports and promoting the Olympic ideal, but also that we worked together for the Hungarian food industry through the Coop Rally, or for the health of our customers through a national screening program. This cooperation can now be enriched by another four years.
