Online shopping is taking a new level: thanks to the collaboration between the American Walmart and OpenAI, ChatGPT users can now order products directly through the platform. The new feature – which will launch in the United States this fall – integrates artificial intelligence into the retail experience and, according to experts, could revolutionize shopping habits, writes vg.hu.

The “Shopping Cart” feature in ChatGPT allows users to browse the entire range of Walmart and Sam’s Club and then purchase selected products with a single click – the system is automatically linked to the customer’s existing account. The offering includes apparel, electronics, and home goods, as well as packaged foods, while fresh goods are not part of the pilot for now.

“This is another step towards making shopping more convenient and meeting people where they are,” said Daniel Danker, Walmart’s vice president of artificial intelligence and design. The new solution builds on previous developments by OpenAI’s other e-commerce partners, such as Etsy and Shopify, but Walmart is the first major retailer to integrate AI into the shopping experience to this extent.

Shopping through ChatGPT is powered by personalized recommendations, conversational search, and contextual responses. The goal is to make the shopping experience a natural conversation – where AI not only understands but also anticipates the needs of the customer. According to experts, this approach could transform the role of traditional online stores in the long term and create a new competitive landscape in online retail.

Walmart has already widely used artificial intelligence: from inventory optimization to shift planning to clothing product development. The partnership with OpenAI now extends the use of AI to the level of consumer interactions and also provides the company’s employees with an AI training program.

Although the service is currently only available in the United States, industry analysts say that similar Hungarian-language, AI-based online shopping solutions may appear in Europe and Hungary within a few years. The new technology is not just a convenience feature – the era of digital sellers is just beginning.
