The renaissance of the beetroot: a superfood in the kitchen and garden
Beetroot has been growing in popularity in recent years, thanks to its versatility and outstanding health benefits. This easy-to-grow root vegetable is grown in an increasing area in our country and is served in many forms – salads, soups, side dishes, and even desserts and smoothies.
Beetroot cultivation in Hungary
According to the National Chamber of Agriculture and the Hungarian Fruit and Vegetable Association (FruitVeB), beetroot is grown on 250-350 hectares in our country, with an annual harvest of 10-20 thousand tons. The area under cultivation has increased by about 100 hectares in the past five years, thanks to economical cultivation and increasing demand. Although beetroot is still primarily a supplementary product on the markets, more and more domestic producers are dealing with it.
Health Benefits of Beetroot
Beetroot is a true superfood that has many beneficial effects on the body:
- Rich in antioxidants: Beta-cyanine, which gives beetroot its red color, has anti-inflammatory properties and can help prevent the formation of cancer cells.
- Rich in folic acid: Especially important for pregnant women, as it promotes the healthy development of the fetus.
- Improves endurance: The nitrates it contains help dilate blood vessels, thereby reducing blood pressure and increasing athletic performance.
- Strengthens the immune system: Its high vitamin C content supports the body’s defenses.
- Supports digestion: Its high fiber content promotes the proper functioning of the intestinal tract.
