Bunge is the world’s leading agribusiness solutions company, connecting farmers with consumers to deliver essential food, feed and fuel to the world. The company has begun a more than $50 million investment to modernize its biomass boiler at its Martfű plant.

The major upgrade will install a state-of-the-art biomass-fired steam boiler that will improve the plant’s operational efficiency, providing the steam needed for oilseed processing. The construction of the new boiler is expected to be completed by September 2026 and the system is expected to be fully operational in early 2028.

“This investment at our Martfű site clearly reflects our commitment to continuous technological development and strengthens our domestic presence in the long term,”

– said János Grászli, Bunge’s head of Hungary.

“By increasing the efficiency of the plant, we aim to further develop our operations in Hungary and continuously provide high-quality products to our partners and consumers.”

The biomass boiler, which uses modern technology, will replace the four currently operating steam generation units and thus meet the entire steam demand of the Martfű factory as a single, efficient system. The new boiler’s technological design enables it to convert biomass into thermal energy more efficiently, with a heat utilization efficiency of 86 percent according to the manufacturer. The upgrade is expected to improve reliability, reduce maintenance requirements and minimize production downtime.

The Martfű plant will continue to use biomass from sunflower husks as an energy source, which is a by-product of Bunge’s production processes, thus ensuring full utilization of raw materials. The new investment also includes an automated ash collection system, which further simplifies handling and allows the residual ash to be used for other purposes.

Thanks to state-of-the-art emission control technologies, the new boiler further improves the environmental performance of the Martfűi power supply system and ensures continued compliance with all applicable European Union industrial emission standards.

The development further strengthens the Martfűi plant’s strategic role within Bunge’s European oilseed processing network, contributing to increased operational efficiency.
