Bunge reduces plastic use by optimizing oil bottle packaging in Hungary
The redesigned bottles produced at the Martfű factory use 11 percent less plastic per bottle, which represents a saving of more than 300 tons of plastic based on production volumes in 2024.
Bunge, a leader in food, feed and fuel solutions, has invested in manufacturing equipment and packaging designs to optimize production facilities. As a result, the amount of plastic needed to produce 1-liter oil bottles produced at the Martfű factory has been reduced by 11% per bottle. This reduction applies to all 1-liter plastic cooking oil bottles, whether for domestic or export markets – including the well-known Vénusz and Floriol brands, as well as domestic private label products.
By using lighter caps and preforms, removing the removable membrane and shortening the neck, the company expects to save more than 300 tonnes of plastic per year based on 2024 production volumes.
“At Bunge, we are constantly striving to increase efficiency in all areas – ensuring that we continue to create value for our customers while also focusing on more sustainable operations,”
said János Grászli, Head of Bunge Hungary. The changes introduced now contribute to reducing the overall weight of the product and the amount of plastic used, while the bottle maintains its structural stability and leak-proofness.
In addition, thanks to the optimized shape, the bottles are now more stable, which provides additional benefits in the production, storage and transportation processes, as well as easier handling for consumers. The improved packaging was subjected to consumer testing to ensure the best possible product quality and customer experience.
As part of the investment, Bunge modernized the production technology at the Martfű plant and installed new blow molding machines and technology at the Martfű bottling plant. The optimized equipment also contributes to increased energy efficiency, as it consumes 35% less electricity than previous machines.
