Despite the fact that last year Budapest Airport’s passenger traffic increased by 20 percent and air cargo volume by 36 percent, compared to 2020, the company closed the second year of the coronavirus pandemic with a serious loss: net sales were 143 million euros in the financial year 2021 with 87.6 euros loss.

The company said in a statement sent to MTI on Monday that last year was another “catastrophic year in the aviation industry”, although it turned out somewhat better than the first year of the pandemic, 2020.

The recovery from the severe crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic began in the second half of the year. Airlines’ capacity and airport traffic have been steadily recovering, but passenger numbers are still far below 2019 levels, he added. (MTI)
