Security is a given: this is how Samsung smart devices support the security of our homes
As invisible threats continue to create more and more security vulnerabilities, Samsung is continuously monitoring user awareness and related regulations. Technological developments have shown that security can no longer be a secondary issue. Artificial intelligence functions have become deeply embedded in everyday life, and more and more invisible gaps may open up for threats. In light of this, it is even more important to design resilient security solutions and create systems that alert users to changes – especially in their most personal spaces, their homes.
Samsung is constantly redefining how digital security can be integrated into users’ everyday lives. The company presented its vision of “AI Home” at the IFA 2025 exhibition, of which security is one of the main pillars. Samsung’s unique security solutions, including Knox Matrix and Knox Vault, support household security across a range of home appliances and contribute to a safer home environment.
Security at the Center
Samsung first introduced the Samsung Knox security system to its home appliances in 2024, but the company has been working on integrated security solutions for more than a decade. As early as 2011, when Samsung was experimenting with developing devices that also function as home control centers, internal research to protect data and prevent phishing began.
According to Changhoon Lee, head of the Security Lab at Samsung’s Digital Appliance Business, the first breakthrough came with the introduction of Family Hub refrigerators. This refrigerator offered integrated services that could store personal data, such as calendar entries, and the device also used information from the Samsung account. Users could remotely connect and control the refrigerator via the SmartThings app.
“At that time, IoT was still new, and users were less aware of the security threats associated with IoT devices,” recalls Lee.
At the beginning of the process, we had to determine what standards and security models could protect home appliances, which required a significant investment in technology.”
At the same time, the first viruses infecting IoT devices appeared, and the emergence of malware targeting connected devices led to a complete paradigm shift and accelerated security research and development.
The company has been increasingly focusing on security meets the requirement
The launch of Family Hub has increased the focus on device security, and the continued evolution of SmartThings has brought with it even more complex technology requirements.
“We had to consider even more factors
– said Lee.
