Chinese internet company Baidu reports third-quarter loss amid revenue decline
Chinese multinational technology company Baidu closed the third quarter of this year with an after-tax loss of 11.23 billion yuan ($1.57 billion) after a profit of 7.63 billion yuan a year earlier, the company’s website said.
Baidu’s revenue in the three months ended September fell 7 percent to 31.17 billion yuan ($4.38 billion) year-on-year.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) (EBITDA) was 4.43 billion yuan ($622 million), down 49 percent from 8.73 billion yuan a year earlier. The adjusted EBITDA margin fell to 14 percent from 26 percent last year.
The company’s core business (Baidu Core) revenue fell 7 percent to 24.66 billion yuan ($3.46 billion) in the third quarter.
The e-commerce segment’s revenue fell 18 percent to 15.3 billion yuan ($2.16 billion). Revenue from the division, which includes cloud services and artificial intelligence development, jumped 21 percent to 9.3 billion yuan ($1.31 billion).
Revenue from Baidu-owned online video platform iQIYI fell 8 percent to 6.7 billion yuan.
