The card terminal company pays HUF 8,000 in compensation to all deceived customers
Fizetési Pont Kft., which operates bank card terminals, deceived its business partners – revealed the investigation of the Economic Competition Office (GVH). The GVH therefore obliged the company to financially compensate the traders involved. The company credits 8,000 forints to all customers who contracted with it during the illegal campaigns.
The national competition authority has concluded its investigation into the business campaigns of Fizetési Pont Kft., which deals with the installation and maintenance of bank card terminals. The procedure revealed that the company unfairly influenced the business decisions of its customers in several ways. In its campaigns, the company kept silent from the merchants that in order to accept bank cards it is not enough for them to install the terminals, but rather to have a long-term (3-5 year) account management and payment contract with another company of the business group, and the two services can only be used together. In addition, the company deceptively promoted certain elements of its offer as discounts and special offers – especially the fees related to the installation and operation of the card terminals, as well as the merchant commission and its amount.
The Competition Council of the GVH evaluated the violation as an aggravating factor, among other things, that it was aimed at a group of business partners with a lower level of awareness, consisting of micro and small businesses, and that it had a long-term effect (it involved a financial service with long-term commitment). At the same time, the competition authority also took into account the fact that the company partially voluntarily corrected the deceptive practice.
