77,000 HUF: this is how much Hungarians plan to spend on Christmas presents this year
We prefer to meet our loved ones in person at Christmas, but we buy gifts more and more often online, for which we plan to spend about HUF six thousand more this year than last year – revealed a recent national representative survey of Christmas customs by Yettel. And it also turns out: as the recipient, we like to be surprised, but if we are the giver, we are happier when we know what the other person wants. For the fifth time, Yettel has assessed Hungarians’ Christmas communication, celebration and gift-giving habits, as well as how they use social media to celebrate and communicate at Christmas.
We’d rather meet in person at Christmas…
Compared to last year, who we spend Christmas with has changed only slightly, but taking into account 2022, the role of personal meetings during major holidays has clearly increased. Four out of ten (42%) only sit around the Christmas tree with their immediate family, i.e. those who live in the same household as them, while slightly more people, nearly half of the respondents (49%) also meet their extended family on the occasion of the holiday. The proportion of those who plan to celebrate with fewer people this year has not changed (12%), the majority of them still typically decide to do so for financial reasons, although the mention of this has decreased from 51% to 31% in the last 2 years.
In the absence of a personal meeting, the respondents mostly call their loved ones on their mobile phones (47%), and 34 percent of the respondents send text messages in some kind of chat application – significantly less than last year (38%).
We use social media to a huge extent during Christmas (94%), but the proportion of those who do not share Christmas-themed content at all has increased from 28% to 38%.
…we buy the gift more and more online
The mobile service provider’s research shows that the number of people who plan to buy Christmas gifts exclusively or mostly online is increasing year by year – this year, four out of ten typically buy this way, and the last time this ratio was this high was during the 2020 pandemic .
Those who shop online mainly do so to save time (55%), to get the gift of their choice only this way (46%), or to avoid crowds and crowds (46%). Convenience (45%) and the possibility of a targeted search (40%) are also important aspects, and many (34%) are also attracted by the lower price available when shopping online.
