600,000 products are moved daily in Tesco’s new logistics center to supply nearly 200 stores within 24 hours
Tesco’s logistics center in Szigetszentmiklós, which was opened in November last year, has been operating at full capacity since March. The 100,000 square meter facility can serve the needs of 198 stores nationwide and customers who visit there or order online within 24 hours. The complex was designed specifically for the operation of the department store chain, according to high-level safety and fire protection standards, with reinforced floor loads, a cooling system that allows temperature fluctuations of only 0.5 degrees Celsius, and a special docking system with locks to prevent heat loss. All products in the building – from arrival to delivery – can be tracked in the warehouse management system, including the Easter delicacies, which have already begun their journey from producers to store shelves.
Tesco’s Szigetszentmiklós logistics center was opened at the end of November 2024, combining the operations of the former Herceghalma and Gyál warehouses into a larger and new facility in order to serve Hungarian customers more effectively, optimize transportation, and significantly reduce environmental impact. The 100,000 square meter complex has been operating at full capacity since March this year, ensuring the supply of goods to Tesco stores nationwide within 24 hours.
Beyond the mandatory
The design of the new center started at the end of 2021, specifically based on Tesco’s unique requirements. The building will handle dry goods that do not require refrigeration, as well as non-food products, vegetables and fruits stored at 12 degrees, and dairy products, meat, fish, and delicatessen stored in the 1 degree hall. The cooling system guarantees a constant temperature, allowing only +/- 0.5 degrees Celsius temperature fluctuations, which ensures the continuity of the cold chain and the proper quality of the fresh goods. In addition, a special docking system with a lock in the hall, cooled to 1 degree, minimizes heat loss during the loading and unloading of trucks. In the event of a power outage, a 15 thousand liter diesel generator ensures continuous power supply. The fire protection design of the building is of a much higher quality than that specified in EU and Hungarian standards. The most modern fire alarms, sprinklers, fire-resistant walls and doors and windows have been installed in the warehouse. The complex’s further safe operation is enabled by 703 cameras, 669 motion detectors, fence protection and a card access control system.
