OpenAI and Amazon announced a long-term strategic partnership in late February to accelerate the spread of AI innovations for enterprises, startups, and individuals worldwide. Under the agreement, Amazon will invest $50 billion in OpenAI. $15 billion upfront and an additional $35 billion upon certain conditions.

“OpenAI and Amazon believe that AI should be practical, truly useful for people. Combining our models with Amazon’s infrastructure and global presence will allow us to deliver advanced AI to enterprises and users,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI.

Under the partnership, OpenAI and Amazon will jointly develop the Stateful Runtime Environment. It is a next-generation development environment built on OpenAI models and available through Amazon Bedrock. The solution enables developers to build AI applications and agents in production, preserving context, memory, and access to devices and data sources. The Stateful Runtime Environment is expected to launch in the coming months.

AWS will also be the exclusive third-party cloud provider for the OpenAI Frontier platform, an advanced enterprise solution that enables organizations to create, deploy, and manage teams of AI agents in real-world business systems with built-in governance and enterprise-grade security. In addition, OpenAI has committed to approximately 2 gigawatts of Trainium compute capacity across AWS infrastructure. This includes Trainium3 and Trainium4 chips, which are expected to ship in 2027. Trainium4 offers significantly higher FP4 compute performance, expanded memory bandwidth, and increased HBM capacity.

“We have many developers and enterprises looking to run services built on OpenAI models on AWS. Our unique collaboration with OpenAI on stateful runtime environments fundamentally changes what is possible for customers building AI applications and agents,” said Andy Jassy, Amazon President and CEO.

In addition, OpenAI and Amazon will also jointly develop AI models tailored for Amazon’s customer service applications.
