The Hungarian Maltese Charity Service is 35 years old
On February 4, the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service is 35 years old, one of the first non-governmental organizations established after the regime change, and today it is the leading charitable organization in the country providing social and health care, which with its 300 institutions and 120 volunteer groups provides care to an average of 15,000 people every day. In addition to traditional support activities, the organization is connected to innovations such as the introduction of telemedicine orders in settlements without a doctor, or the development of social solar power plants.
The Hungarian Maltese Charity Association was founded on February 4, 1989, immediately after the law enabling the establishment of civil organizations was published. The court registered the organization with number 10, which takes care of the poor and the downtrodden, working with volunteers, which became the center of international attention that year with the reception of East German refugees, the aid operations organized during the Romanian revolution, and later with its humanitarian work during the South Slavic war. In the fall of 1990, the Maltese Charity Service opened its first institution for homeless people in what was then Moskva Square, and then gradually more and more support groups were formed all over the country.
After thirty-five years, the Maltese Charitable Service is one of the largest charitable organizations in Hungary, which cares for almost 6,000 people who have lost their homes through its more than sixty homeless care institutions, 3,000 people in its nursing homes, 2,500 people in its institutions for the disabled, and 3,000 mostly disadvantaged children attend its 17 public education institutions.
