290 million forints in the weekend fundraising
On Friday and Saturday, customers collected 244 tons of food donations at the call of the Hungarian Food Bank Association in 410 stores across the country. The power of the collaboration is characterized by the fact that donations worth 300 thousand forints were received every minute of the two-day campaign. From the donations, the Food Bank will put together 49 thousand five-kilo packages for people and families living in need, which it will distribute throughout the country until the start of the summer holidays.
The largest food collection in the country’s history took place over the weekend, organized by the Hungarian Food Bank Association, with donations collected in a total of 410 ALDI, Auchan, Lidl and Tesco stores. The coordinated work of 5,500 volunteers was also needed to ensure the smooth running of the campaign, as it has never been possible to make donations in so many places at the same time.
They nurtured hope together
Fortunately, the time and energy invested by the helpers paid off handsomely, as the campaign ultimately ended with a total of 244 tons, meaning that 49,000 people in need will benefit from the aid packages in the coming weeks.
“We would like to thank all donors, the retail chains that have hosted our collaboration and their employees, as well as our dedicated volunteers. Together, we can literally feed hope. The collected donations will benefit the elderly, large families and single-parent households, residents of children’s homes, people with disabilities and people living in the most disadvantaged settlements in the country,” said András Nagygyörgy, the Food Bank’s director of external relations.
The desire to donate overcame supplies
After many years of dominance, this weekend the most frequently donated product was not flour, but pasta, of which a total of 53 thousand kilos were received. This number could have been higher, but there were stores where stocks simply ran out by Saturday afternoon, the product practically disappeared from the shelves – the desire to donate won.
Rice came in second place on the imaginary podium, and to the great joy of the organizers, there were also a lot of donations of canned food and pasta sauces. The latter can easily be used to round off the large amounts of side dishes offered into a complete main meal. Many donors also thought about the upcoming Children’s Day, as more than 28 tons of sweets and baby food were collected.
