A traditional, 220 year-old cake-shop has just closed in Pécs
Caflish, previously running under the name Éva has been part of the scenery of Pécs since 1789, as a cake shop and a coffee shop, and went bankrupt this spring.
The name Caflish derived from Kristóf Caflish, a Switzerland-born master-confectioner who moved to Pécs in 1865, at the age of 26.”Operators of the cake-shop have been struggling with „unbearable economic conditions” for years” – Tamás Háber, restaurant-owner in Pécs, director of the Hungarian Restaurant-owners' Guild pointed out. „In the beginning of the year, their rent has gone up sky-high, and they were forced to build their own firm in the garden. Old, traditional restaurants are in a serious danger all over the country. Current circumstances and irrationally strict rules make it impossible to be successful in the long run” – he added.
