By 2020 an expansion of supermarkets and discount stores is expected
GfK Hungária recently examined short-, mid-, and long-term retail trends. Based on the results they prepared several scenarios for 2011-2020. Hypermarkets’ market share is expected to remain 23 percent in 2011, but by 2015 it can reach 24 percent. Supermarkets’ share is assumed to grow to 21 percent in 2011 and to 22 percent by 2015. According to forecasts, discount stores can reach 17 percent next year and by 2015 their market share may reach 20 percent. The shrinking market of independent small shops will be beneficial to the market share of small shops that formed chains. Cash&Carry stores will lose half of their present market share by 2015 and will be at 1 percent. Drugstores will hold on to their 3-percent share. The retail channel that is made up of markets, vendors, petrol stations, etc. will slowly but steadily lose market share, going down to 7 percent from their present 9.5 percent by 2015.
