Modern Hungarian industrial beer production is 175 years old
The Association of Hungarian Brewers celebrated the beginning of modern Hungarian beer production 175 years ago with a professional round table discussion with the participation of the managers of the five largest breweries operating in Hungary. The participants of the round table emphasized that without continuous product and production technology development since 1848, today’s successful operation would be unthinkable, but the efficiency that ensures the internationally expected returns in the industry can only be ensured with additional billions of forints invested in the sector.
In 1848, in Pécs, József Puchner founded the legal predecessor of the country’s first modern brewery, Pécsi Sörfőzde Zrt., on the site of the hospital brewery of the old Franciscan monastery. The past 175 years have brought enormous changes both in terms of manufactured products and in the needs of consumers, which have been accompanied by enormous developments. also at the locations of Heineken Hungária Sörgyárak Zrt. and Borsodi Sörgyár Kft., founded in 1973.
The industrial revolution XIX. His invention of the 19th century, the refrigerator operated by a steam engine, was the first to be introduced in beer production, as well as modern water analysis. The energy of the steam engine has now been replaced by electricity from a renewable energy source, and the most modern digital production control has been added to the water analytics. Thanks to this, the range of Hungarian breweries’ products and the amount of production have increased many times over the past nearly two centuries. In 1890, only 1.2 million hectoliters of beer were produced in Hungary, while in 2022 production exceeded five and a half million hectoliters.
