152 stores, 3 days, HUF 111 million worth of product donations – the balance of a Tesco weekend
93 tons of food donations were collected in the non-perishable food collection campaign of the Magyar Élélmiszerbank Egyesület last weekend in Tesco stores, in which well-known actors also participated. This is the 13th time Tesco has joined the campaign, which took place between November 18 and 20, to provide support to those in need during the holiday season with the help of its customers. This year too, the supermarket chain will add 20 percent of the value of the donated food to the charitable offerings.
This year, the Magyar Élélmiszerbank Egyesület’s weekend Christmas food collection campaign was extremely successful, to which Tesco also joined in accordance with the practice of the past years. Between November 18 and 20, customers could offer non-perishable food as a donation in 152 Tesco stores across the country. Thus, among other things, rice, canned meat and ready meals, sauces and gravies, biscuits, chocolate, baby food, pasta, long-lasting milk, coffee and sweets were collected for the benefit of the needy in a total amount of 93 tons. The most active were the customers of the Váci út hypermarket in Budapest, where actors Kriszta Kováts, Lia Pokorny and Tibor Fehér also helped with the collection. The donors here contributed a total of 3,114 kilograms of food to the total amount. At the same time, the customers of the smaller stores were also outstanding donors, as compared to the size of the store, the customers of four hypermarkets (Esztergom, Ajka, Szombathely, Eger) offered the most donations.
“As a strategic partner of the Hungarian Food Bank Association, it was natural for us to join the Christmas non-perishable food collection campaign in 2022 as well. It gives me pleasure that our customers, despite the inflation that affects everyone, take the plight of the needy to heart and have contributed to creating a festive atmosphere for those living in difficult situations. Those who may have missed the weekend event can still take part in the charity campaign, because until November 30 it is possible to donate online on the Tesco Otthonrór interface, where four donation packages of different sizes and values are available in the amount of HUF 1,000, 2,000, 3,000 and 5,000″– said Nóra Hevesi, head of communications at Tesco Hungary.
“Thank you to everyone who, even with a bottle of jam or a box of tea, helped make the Christmas of people with a difficult fate more beautiful and happier. We are also extremely grateful to the volunteers who organized and made the initiative a success. Thanks to their work, more than HUF 111 million worth of product donations were collected in Tesco stores, which the department store chain supplemented with an additional HUF 22.5 million in support, providing additional huge help to our work throughout the year. The food collected will be distributed mainly to the elderly, large families, people in family support services and children’s homes, people with disabilities, homeless people and residents of the country’s most disadvantaged settlements in the period before the holidays and during the coldest weeks of January,” said Balázs Cseh, president of the Food Bank.
