DIA Earmarks €125m To Upgrade In-Store Refrigeration Systems
Spanish grocery retailer DIA plans to invest €125 million by 2029 to upgrade its in-store refrigeration systems – a key part of its larger decarbonisation plan.
Launched in 2024, the initiative has already enabled DIA to modernise refrigeration in almost 400 stores – including 267 of them in 2025 alone – putting the company ahead of its targets for the first half of the year.
This investment is part of DIA’s strategy to reduce its carbon footprint, improve operational efficiency, and minimise fluorinated gas leaks.
By 2030, the company aims to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42%, compared to 2020 levels, in line with the Paris Agreement and new European regulations on fluorinated gases.
Sustainable Logistics
As well as refrigeration, DIA is also focusing on making its logistics more sustainable.
Over half (55%) of DIA España’s logistics centres now use cold-energy decarbonisation. New facilities – like the one in Dos Hermanas, near Seville, which opened in May – are being built to meet environmental standards, including BREEAM certification and the use of rooftop solar panels.
Furthermore, nine of the company’s 11 logistics centres have a zero-waste certification issued by Saica Natur, in collaboration with TÜV SÜD as the verifying entity.
As part of its transition plan, DIA is incorporating low-emission vehicles, such as electric and LNG trucks, into its delivery fleet, to comply with urban regulations and minimise its environmental impact.
The company has adopted the Mercedes-Benz eActros 300, the first mass-produced 100% electric truck, and joined the AirShared community to optimise seven transportation routes and reduce emissions by sharing logistics with other manufacturers.
