12,358 people in need can live well from the food collected by Tesco and its customers in two days
Compared to last year, 100 tons more donations were received in the Hungarian Food Bank Association’s national spring non-perishable food collection campaign over the weekend. Of this, 61,789 kilograms were donated by Tesco customers, helping a total of 12,358 people in need in their immediate vicinity. The largest number of donations, a total of 1,755 kilograms, was collected at the Mátészalka hypermarket among Tesco stores. Charitable organizations operating in the vicinity of the stores will deliver the donations to those in need in the coming weeks.
The Food Bank’s food collection to support those in disadvantaged situations took place on May 9 and 10, during which a total of nearly 244 tons of food donations were received nationwide for individuals and families in need. This year, more than last year, a total of 126 Tesco stores joined the initiative, where customers donated nearly 62 tons of non-perishable food, including canned goods, rice, pasta, flour, cooking oil, sugar, sweets, UHT milk, jam, preserves, baby food, and sauces.
Customers were the most active at the Mátészalka store, where 1,755 kilograms of donations were handed over to the Food Bank volunteers, while the second and third largest donations came from customers at the Tesco hypermarket in Szekszárd and the Tesco Extra stores on Fogarasi út in Budapest: 1,295 and 1,275 kilograms, respectively. The largest quantities of food donated were pasta, rice and flour, and a total of 4,584 kilograms of sweets were also included in the donor baskets, which will primarily benefit children in need on the upcoming Children’s Day.
“I am incredibly proud of our customers, who enthusiastically support good causes year after year – this time they collected nearly 62,000 kg, worth more than 67.6 million forints, in Tesco stores. The Food Bank can put together more than 12,300 food packages from these, which will be continuously distributed over the next month, mainly to the elderly, large families and single-parent households, recipients of family support services and children’s homes, people with disabilities, the homeless and residents of the most disadvantaged settlements in the country. We would like to thank the selfless help of those who came to our stores; this time it has been proven once again that together we can achieve fantastic results!”
– said Nóra Hevesi, Tesco’s Head of Communications in Hungary.
