Hyper markets are undoubtedly a French invention. Carrefour has been the first to open a store of this type in a suburb of Paris. Let’s take a look at the French hyper markets of the 21st century. Life in France is accelerating as well and this is not very good for hyper markets located on the outskirts of cities, as it is quite difficult to approach them and recession is not the time for impulsive shopping. There are almost 5,000 discounts in France at the moment and their number is rising steeply. One of the biggest Auchan hyper markets in France is located in Vélizy. Its total floor area is over 20,000 square meters. One of the most stunning sights is the assortment of fruits, where customers are served by 37 clerks on 1,200 square meters. The assortment is not only huge but beautiful as well. The assortment of other fresh products is also spectacular, reflecting purchasing power which is three times higher then in Hungary. The selection of wines and champagnes is also extraordinary by Hungarian standards. EUR 1,300 bottles of Chateau Petrus are sold in all hyper markets in Paris. When we want cheese, we are asked by the clerk if it is to be eaten today or tomorrow. Though its smell is horrifying, it tastes delicious. Monoprix belongs to the elite of Paris supermarkets and is a leader in innovative products, like Coca-Cola with vitamins and anti-oxidants. A very impressive amount of information is provided about product categories. The reason for the difference in price between different types of goose liver is explained in full detail. Sales of pharmaceuticals are rising rapidly in hyper markets. However, there are shortcomings as well. As a result of the 35 hour week, we can always see signs of insufficient attention on the shelves. Though the Auchan stores in Vélizy and Défense have been modernised, the majority of stores are far from brand new. Floor tiles are often broken, the shelves are sometimes dirty and the shopping carts are old. And young beggars are really annoying.
