McDonald’s has filed for trademark registration in Russia
McDonald’s has filed an application with the Russian patent office, Rospatent, to register the trademark “McDonald’s”, writes Telex, following Meduza. The company filed the application in December 2024, which Rospatent has now officially accepted for consideration.
The purpose of the trademark registration is to allow the McDonald’s name to be used in Russia for drinks, fast food, restaurant services and food delivery. However, McDonald’s clarified in response to a request from the Ukrainian Economic Pravda that the registration does not mean that the company intends to re-enter the Russian market. According to the company’s statement, the move serves solely to protect the brand name in order to prevent unauthorized use of the trademark by businesses or individuals in Russia.
McDonald’s announced its withdrawal from the Russian market in May 2022, following Russia’s attack on Ukraine. The restaurants were then purchased by Alexander Govor, a Siberian McDonald’s franchisee. The former units have since continued to operate under the name “Vkuszno i tocska” (Hungarian: Delicious and Pungent).
